Mini Festival at Home: Budget, Schedule and Invitation

A mini festival at home is a small festival party with music, food and a few activities guests can choose between. You do not need a stage or an all-day lineup. Here is a plan for ten friends over four hours, in a garden or living room, with a simple shared budget and an invitation you can copy.

Set the basics before planning the lineup

Start with the guest list, location and two possible dates. Check how many people you can actually fit indoors if it rains. Decide on a start time, an end time and whether you will share costs. With those details clear, guests can reply knowing whether they are committing to an afternoon or a whole weekend.

Example budget: $100 for ten people

This is a suggested allocation of a chosen budget, not a set of quoted store prices. Include the host in the headcount, check prices before shopping and agree on contributions in advance. The example assumes you already have tables, seating, tableware and a speaker.

• $50 for a simple shared meal, such as soup with bread or a pasta dish.
• $20 for alcohol-free drinks.
• $15 for snacks or something sweet.
• $5 for homemade signs and simple decorations.
• $10 as a reserve.
• Total: $100, or $10 each if ten people split the cost equally.

If food costs more, skip decorations first. A potluck is another option, but assign contributions so everyone does not bring snacks. Ask about allergies and other dietary needs before settling the menu. Avoid buying equipment for one evening if someone can lend it.

A simple four-hour mini festival schedule

1. 4:00 pm: Welcome drinks and time to settle in.
2. 4:30 pm: Optional activities open: lawn games or board games, a shared playlist and a quiet conversation corner.
3. 5:30 pm: A shared meal so everyone spends some time together.
4. 6:15 pm: A short quiz or music round for anyone who wants to join.
5. 6:45 pm: Free time for games, music and conversation.
6. 7:45–8:00 pm: Tidy up together and finish at the agreed time.

Leave gaps in the schedule. Two or three activities are enough when guests also want to eat and talk. Keep the speaker away from the conversation area and make the quiz optional. A handwritten lineup and a good playlist can provide the festival feel.

Share three small jobs

Ask one friend to collect song requests, another to bring a game and another to help with food. Be specific about each task and ask first. The host can keep track of replies and timing without spending the entire evening as cook, DJ and activity leader.

Have a rain plan

Decide beforehand which activities can move inside. Lawn games can become card games, and food can be served from the kitchen counter. If you cannot fit everyone indoors, agree on a backup date and when guests will hear about the decision. Consider your neighbors when choosing the volume and finish time.

An invitation you can copy

‘Join me for a mini festival at my place on Saturday, 4–8 pm! There will be up to ten of us, with simple food, music, games and plenty of time to chat. The suggested contribution is $10 each for shared food and alcohol-free drinks. We'll move indoors if it rains. Please reply by Tuesday and let me know about any food or access needs. Activities are optional, and you don't need to bring anything unless we arrange it.’
